12 Degrees & Skiving

what began as year-long challenge has become perpetual until further notice

conditions of light

i don’t fuse
into the day we met
i was fresh and burnished
because i didn’t know them yet

be yourself

they said
they meant

be brilliant
and not too bright to look at

be the mirror I coveted
and trim the cloud shadows

those heaving fields
are nice
though one’s tongue
pokes like furred teeth
all those darkened furrows
that aren’t mine

use a good wash of springlight
swill and rinse

there! you’re almost as I remember

their transience laved me
blue smoke filled the weave of me
while i wove the right words
so as never to whitehot
firebrand again

two solstice suns since
have blinked the ridgeline
and sunk steaming
and a king tide of nights
and notebooks
wide-eyed running
backward to the sea to cool eyelids and ears
till I ripped the last page
to a choir of gasps
and kept it all for myself

“Remember This” it said

“their desolation is not yours
nor yours to swelter from them”

it took that page, it took
sand to turn to glass
a valley of apertures
a screen of hills
and the lightmeter love of my life
to tell me the truth of the image

i don’t fuse
into the day we met
because i am more than the firelight ghost
coughed from their lens
