12 Degrees & Skiving

what began as year-long challenge has become perpetual until further notice

• Week 44 • Sapphic Stanza •

whenever the red golds of poetry toyed
with strange tides that unfurled, lifted the air’s tight
feathers, when abstract thought was always ever
a place of comfort

that stitched meaning to the lining of my days –
there i made my own blanket to lie upon,
frantic with the need to see a sky filtered
through poplar branches

and forests filled with words, lakes of tales
to be fished for before they could be told.
i went once, to say yes to the telling,
and never returned.

The Sapphic stanza is a syllable/meter-based poetic structure from Ancient Greece and contains dactyls and trochees. Confused? Try writing one. It’s much better explained here.
I’m not so sure that I have done the original form justice, due to correctly-placed syllabic stresses of words – or lack of them, in my case – but from what I can see from the structure of The Anactoria Poem, each four line stanza contains 11 syllables in each of the first 3 lines and the fourth line contains 5 syllables.
