At the Border of Summer

Ivy suckers tattoo old yellow brick;
the sun on my neck is my father’s hand.
Autumn clothes the elms with slow measure, lick
by inflamed lick: two seasons’ sarabande.
Syllables of tart orange stain the sand
under my toes, and the cat – furred ensign
of Old Sol – sleeps in the stolen outline
of nautilus shell. These red ideas, foaled
at the border of summer, realign
with crosshatched light and the promise of cold.

A Dizain is a ten-line, eight or ten syllable poetic form set to the rhyme scheme of a, b, a, b, c, c, d, c, d.
